I watched the Blackhawks defeat the LA Kings during the day while I recovered from the previous evening's journey to Madison.  I stopped in B-N at Steak 'n Shake.  After finding a parking spot in the university garage there was a huge line to go inside which wrapped around the block.  I barely made it inside the venue before showtime.

The Bob Marley cover to open was a rare choice.  AIT to sandwich the remainder of the set worked well.  Day Nurse was played in a similiar position at the last Canopy Club show.  August was the highlight of the first set.  Ringo was a heavier version.  None of the jams at this show really stretched out that much.  It was the last show of the tour and the venue was unbearably hot.  I requested Hey 19 via Joel on Twitter.  That was my first time hearing that Steely Dan cover in 147 shows.

Sociable Jimmy and 13 Days were an old school pairing to start the second set. 46 & 2 was incredibly heavy.  Hangover > Fuzz > Hangover was a bit of a lull for me.  Night Nurse was a great version and was my favorite moment of the second set.  Mulche's was a impressive rendition.  Kimble appeared that it might end the set before they finally settled upon Wappy which kept the dancing going.   By this point I was exhausted.  They did a Spinal Tap fakeout before an interesting 1348 to close things out.  This show was more of a had to be there type performance.  It may not necessarily have all that much replay value but it was fun in the moment.

I worked a 10 hour day and then drove by myself the three hour journey to Madison this evening for UM. It was my first live music of the year. Immediately I saw familiar faces including Ocean Timmy and Steve A in the line to enter. We commanded a large section of the Jake side balcony. I liked the new reconfigured Orpheum stage setup. In retrospect the sound was better on the floor but I had an enjoyable experience with our group of friends. I parked in the Overture Center garage and was shocked at how cold it was. Mike Dillon Band was forgettable what little I saw of it. I liked the poster and made that purchase.

I'm still learning the intros. 2nd Self had a nice peak by BB. Puppet String has been the bands go to song recently. The Triple Wide was my favorite jam of the first set. I liked the slowed down tempo and eventual groove. Haji was well placed. The songs with Mike Dillon added to the flavor of the set. Reso per usual had some interesting playing before dropping into the end of Puppet String. Well played first set. I went to Pizza Di Roma during the setbreak

The entire second set was energy filled and played with purpose. Its hard to pinpoint who was the MVP with Jaco and Joel being my picks. Jajunk had a fruitful piece of improv. Slacker and Linear both had improv, one of which had an Eminem jam that I recognized from the Chryster commercial. I liked the unexpected drop back into the finale of Jajunk. Conduit was anti-climatic playcalling but had an incredible peak before finishing up Mantis. 40's appeared to be the set closer but they generously gave us the Seger cover. The encore was Divisions with a verse of How Many More Times. At that point I hit the road and beat the crowd. I loved the overall energy of this show. There were several jams that demand a second listen. This was my 146th Umphrey's McGee show.
